Overview

Over the last decade, emerging technologies like Multi-touch, Virtual Reality (VR), Extended Reality (XR), Voice and 3D Touch have been propelling us toward the next generation of human-computer interactions. But the pandemic of 2020 accelerated the speed of innovation—at home, at work, and inside government. Some examples include:

  • The corporate tech team for manufacturing company Siemens began working in a virtual simulation of their lab, doing demos for people around the world.
  • Use of voice activated assistants like Siri and Alexa is growing massively because they make technology more accessible—and make everyday tasks easier.
  • Popular VR games like Beat Saber may still be the most widely recognized applications of VR technology, but automotive giants like Ford are also using VR to help teams collaborate virtually.
  • The U.S. Air Force, among many other organizations, has adopted VR training for a variety of its programs, one of which cut the required training time and related costs significantly for pilot training.
With technologies going beyond the touchscreen, what are the implications for business? How do we design user experiences that immerse users into a new reality? And how can we make smarter decisions about allocating the resources necessary for adopting, developing, and marketing new technologies?

Developed by NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering, this program will get you up to speed on the environment of emerging technologies as it applies to new interfaces and digital product development. Gain both historic and modern perspective on designing with emerging technologies, and a framework for how to identify opportunities, and apply human centered design approach to ideate and innovate with emerging technologies at your organization.

Who Is This Program For?

This program was created to provide a solid understanding of the business considerations for modern interfaces and emerging technologies for product managers and creative and product directors in the areas of product development, product management and interactive design. The program was developed for business and product managers and is not geared toward experienced designers.

  • Product managers seeking to gain a better understanding of how product designs are evolving, stay current with the latest trends and technology related to emerging user interfaces, and learn principles and best practices around interface design and emerging technologies.
  • Creative/innovation/product directors looking to develop a strategy for implementing best practices related to interface design and product development with emerging technologies, better understand the impact of related privacy and security concerns, improve the user experience for their company’s products and services, and develop a mindset that drives innovation with digital tools.

Faculty Member Ori Inbar

Ori Inbar

Founder & Managing Partner, Super Ventures

Ori Inbar is one of the world’s leading experts in augmented reality and has devoted the past decade to fostering the AR ecosystem as an entrepreneur, ecosystem builder, advisor and investor. He is the Founder and Managing Partner for Super Ventures and CEO of AugmentedReality.Org, the nonprofit organization that produces Augmented World Expo (AWE), the top industry conference for AR since 2010. In this role, he leads worldwide operations for AWE, the largest global conference and events for AR and VR with over 10,000 attendees worldwide. In 2009, Ori was the Co-founder and CEO of Ogmento (now Flyby Media, acquired by Apple to be the foundation for ARKit). Previously, as Senior Vice President at SAP, Ori grew the SAP Netweaver platform from a concept to a billion-dollar business. He led the development and launch for dozens of products and business applications, including the world’s leading enterprise portal, which in 2001 was acquired by SAP for $400 Million.

Faculty Member Rashida Richardson

Rashida Richardson

Assistant Professor of Law and Political Science, Northeastern University

Rashida Richardson is a lawyer and researcher interested in the social and legal implications of “Big Data” and data-driven technologies with a racial justice focus. Her research examines the social and civil rights implications of data driven technologies, including artificial intelligence. She also collaborates with legal advocacy, research, and community-based organizations to develop and inform policy interventions and regulatory strategies regarding data driven technologies, government surveillance, racial discrimination, and the technology sector. In 2020, Rashida was a featured interviewee in the Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of Law and Political Science at Northeastern University and previously served as an Adjunct Professor at NYU School of Law and as the Director of Policy at NYU’s AI Now Institute.

Faculty Member Sam Brewton

Sam Brewton

UX & Interaction Designer

Sam Brewton designs augmented reality for enterprise applications and brand experiences. He started his design career in Shanghai in 2008. He specializes in user experience, design strategy, and business. He graduated from Parsons School of Design and is adjunct faculty in at the School of Visual Arts. After time at R/GA, Sam is now the Lead AR Designer and Product Manager at Apprentice.io. He is also a member of the Interaction Design Association.
